The forest was quiet only to the deaf. But for those who listen, sound is all around- the creaking of tree trunks as they grow, the snap of a twig as it falls, the rustle of a bird's wings high in the canopy. Skop heard all these things, and more. But he heard no troubling sound, and made none himself. He limped through the shadows, invisible to most. Only those with keen senses equal to his own stood any chance of knowing he had passed, let alone tracking him. Normally, he used less caution, but in this state he was unwilling to get into trouble.
Nearly a moon earlier he had been forced into a fight. And though he managed to escape his assailers, they left a large cut across his flank. It was refusing to heal, and was only slightly less severe and painful than when he had first sustained it. The handsome red-tinted wolf slumped in the shade of a tree, protected on either side by massive roots. It had been some time since he last ate; his wound prevented him from hunting well. Skop licked it in vain, gave up, and laid his head on his paws, settling down to sleep.
